Len’I McKinney is a distinguished saxophonist, recording artist, and creative force whose sound is rooted in Gospel and shaped by the rich musical landscape of Chicago – drawing from jazz, soul, R&B, funk, house, rock, and pop to create a voice that is both deeply authentic and unmistakably her own.

Born and raised in Harvey, Illinois, she began her formal musical journey at Michigan State University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music with a focus in Jazz Studies under the direction of internationally acclaimed bassist Rodney Whitaker. She was also selected as a prestigious Gates Scholar, an honor reflecting both academic excellence and artistic promise.

While at Michigan State University, Len’I performed with the Jazz Orchestra I, sharing the stage with jazz legends including Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Antonio Hart, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and John Clayton, among others. During her graduate studies, she was featured twice as a solo artist at the nationally renowned Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, further establishing her presence as a rising voice in jazz performance.

Her professional career spans an extensive range of genres and collaborations, including performances and recordings with artists such as Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Ginuwine, Tony! Toni! Toné!, TINK, Jeff Bradshaw, and Mike Burton. She has also performed as baritone saxophonist with premier ensembles including the Count Basie Orchestra, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz for Young People, the Dr. Phillips Center Jazz Orchestra (Orlando), the Gathering Jazz Orchestra (Detroit), the Clif Wallace Big Band (Chicago), and the Rodney Whitaker Group.

With over two decades embedded in the Chicago and national music scene, Len’I has built a reputation for versatility, musical excellence, and commanding stage presence. She currently leads a touring band for R&B icon Miki Howard, directs her own jazz ensembles through McKinney Music LLC, and serves as co-founder of the company alongside Talon McKinney, where they create elevated, intentional live music experiences.

As a composer, producer, and emerging solo artist, Len’I continues to expand her creative voice while developing her debut project. Her work reflects a deep commitment to artistry and emotional connection — creating performances that are not just heard, but deeply felt.
