The Story Behind MaritalSax
Talon and Len’I McKinney’s musical journey began in 2010 during the Chicago Jazz Fest. While street performing alongside their mutual best friend, the renowned musician Jerry “Jayflat” Williams, Len’I passed by and noticed the duo spreading joy on the streets. Feeling inspired by their dedication, she decided to bring them a cheeseburger before asking to play saxophone with them as well. Little did she know, her simple act of kindness would spark a connection that would change their lives forever.
Talon was immediately struck by Len’I’s beauty, her random act of kindness, and her impressive saxophone skills. While Talon insists that Len’I gave him her phone number on the spot with her charm, Len’I humorously believes she made him work a little harder for it—letting a few more performances pass before the number exchange. Regardless of the details, that moment marked the beginning of MaritalSax, the world’s first married saxophone duo.
After marrying in 2011, Talon and Len’I went on to create their family, welcoming two daughters: Laya (2014) and Talia (2022), both of whom are already showing a passion for music and a desire to carry on the McKinney Music LLC legacy.
The story of MaritalSax is one of love, music, and shared experiences. Every time Talon and Len’I step onto a stage, they aim to blend their personal journeys with their musical expertise, creating an unforgettable and dynamic performance. Their goal is simple: to spread joy through music, whether it’s an intimate setting or a large concert hall.
Over the years, MaritalSax has had the privilege of performing both collectively and individually with legendary artists and ensembles, including Tony Toni Tone, Jennifer Hudson, Miki Howard, Ginuwine, The Four Tops, Jimmy Johnson, Syl Johnson, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s The Blues, Rodney Whitaker, Fantasia, Midnight Sun, the Dr. Phillips Center Jazz Orchestra, The Gathering Jazz Orchestra, The Clif Wallace Big Band, The Windy City Ramblers, and many more.
